The three most common ways for a surgery patient to receive blood are:
- Blood bank... when a unit of blood from an anonymous donor is collected, tested for safety and stored
- Pre-Donation... when a surgery patient expecting a procedure donates their own blood to be used, if needed, and their own blood is stored until the date of the procedure
- Auto-transfusion... when a piece of equipment, such as the OrthoPAT system, uses the patient's own blood at the time of the procedure without the need for storage
If you are scheduling a surgical procedure at Okanogan Douglas District Hospital in Brewster, Washington soon or an unexpected surgical procedure is needed, ask your doctor or the OR Supervisor about your options of using the OrthoPAT system.
